The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has called on the Federal Government to create enabling environment for teachers to acquire professional certificates as required in the country.

NLC General Secretary Peter Eson-Ozo said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Friday.
Eson-Ozo said the challenge before the country in the education sector was shortage of teachers and called for partnership with the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) to address the problem.
According to him, the aspiration of every parent is to have qualified and certified teachers teaching their children.
Eson-Ozo advocated a meeting of relevant stakeholders in the sector to initiate programmes that would facilitate the certification of teachers.
“The NUT is a major stakeholder that government should engage to make the process of registration and certification seamless for teachers.
“The use of threat will not help the situation because at the end, if you adopt the policy of sacking, where are we going to produce teachers,” he asked.
He called for urgent registration of qualified teachers, adding that most schools in the country were currently understaffed.
The Federal Government had on Wednesday announced that teachers without Professional Certificate of the Teachers’ Registration Council (TRCN) would be shown the way out of teaching profession by the end of 2017.
Prof. Olusegun Ajiboye, the Registrar and Chief Executive of TRCN, said the decision was part of the three-year Ministerial Strategic Plan by the Minister of Education, Malam Adamu Adamu.
