Authorities  of the West Africa Examinations Council (WAEC) has again reiterated it’s idetermination to square  up with perpetrators of examination malpractice in the sub-region. In what way they would want to remain in shameful deals.
Addressing newsmen at a Pre-event briefing preparatory to an internatiomal   summit on examination malpractice in Lagos,  on Tuesday,  Niyi  Uwadiae , Registrar of the Council acknowledged that examinat the svourge  remains the most notorious challenge facing examining bodies and other educational institutions in WAEC member countries.
“Currently, the malaise has assumed dangerous and criminal dimensions on the heels of advancement in technology which created the smartphones,   the social media,  and others, “he said.
He said the Council in the five member countries have adopted measures and deployed technology to curb the menace, saying that that the ever-festering menace had persisted through encouragement by misguided parents,  adults,  rogue websites and school owners  that are now deploying sophisticated methods of cheating.
“For instance,  in the May/June1993 WASSCE in Nigeria,  the results of only 58,494 candidates were withheld because of examination malpractice , but by WASSCE for school certificates,  2017 the number of  candidates results similarly witheld had shot up to 214,952,”he added.
According to him research studies have shown that one of the ways of curbing the worrisome trends in examinations irregularities is by mounting of public enlightenment campaigns to draw attention of the stakeholders and the general public to the menace.
The summit scheduled to hold in Lagos on 19th and 20th of October has as its theme, “Examination Malpractice :The Contemporary Realities and Antidotes” while the keynote address is expected to be  delivered by Emeritus Professor Pius Obanya.
