The Canada government has outlined six key requirements that foreign nationals must meet to be eligible for a visitor visa, stressing that applicants must convince immigration officers they intend to leave the country at the end of their stay.

According to Canada’s immigration guidelines, prospective visitors must first possess a valid travel document, such as a passport, before applying for a temporary resident visa.

Applicants are also required to be in good health and have no criminal or immigration-related convictions that could make them inadmissible to Canada.

Beyond these basic conditions, immigration officials will assess whether applicants have strong ties to their home country. These ties may include employment, a home, financial assets or close family members, which help demonstrate that the visitor intends to return after their trip.

The government also requires applicants to satisfy immigration officers that they will leave Canada once their authorised stay expires.

Financial capacity is another important consideration. Applicants must prove they have enough money to support themselves during their visit, although the amount required depends on factors such as the duration of the stay and whether they will be staying in a hotel or with relatives or friends.

In some cases, applicants may also be asked to undergo a medical examination or provide a letter of invitation from someone residing in Canada.

The six key requirements include:

Holding a valid travel document, such as a passport.
Being in good health.
Having no criminal or immigration-related convictions.
Demonstrating strong ties to their home country.
Convincing an immigration officer they will leave Canada at the end of their visit.
Showing they have sufficient funds to cover their stay.
Canada’s visitor visa, also known as a temporary resident visa, allows eligible foreign nationals to enter the country for tourism, visiting family or friends, or other short-term purposes, subject to immigration approval.
