Amid Dwindling Purchasing Power Of Naira, January Inflation Eases To 15.10 Percent

Nigeria’s headline inflation rate moderated slightly to 15.10% in January 2026, down from 15.15% recorded in December 2025, according to the latest Consumer Price Index report released by the nation’s bureau of statistics, (NBS).

However,  the dwindling purchasing power of the nation’s currency,  the naira, has continued to erode the expected gains from the fall in the prices of items, particularly, food stuff.

This is despite improvement in food supply, stable exchange rate and possibly prices of pms.

Some analysts say, a situation where the value of naira continues deprecating, rendering lower denominations ineffective for daily transactions, will only make the mouthed easing inflation figures as mere academic eexercises,  adding that some of the economic  fundamentals, like, production, cost of doing business, electricity,  among others are right

The marginal decline of 0.05 percentage points suggests a continued slowdown in price pressures at the start of the year, following several months of easing inflation.

On a year-on-year basis, inflation dropped significantly compared to the same period last year.

The January 2026 rate of 15.10% is 12.51 percentage points lower than the 27.61% recorded in January 2025
