At least four students have been reportedly crushed to death while several were injured after a truck carrying building materials lost control.

A trending video showed that the incident occurred around 8:30am while residents cried out in distress as they helped pull the children out from under the truck.

The pupils were said to be walking from Egbolo to Ofuloko, due to non existence of schools in their area, when the truck, which was struggling to climb a hill along the Idah route, suddenly veered off and fell on them.

The incident immediately sparked protest as residents took to the streets in their numbers, saying their community has no functioning school, blaming the tragedy on the long distances their children must trek through unsafe routes to attend classes in neighbouring villages.

One of the parents whose son was among the victims accused the government of neglecting Egbolo for years and called for urgent action to stop further incidents.

A correspondent with Arise News at the accident scene revealed that officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) had not arrived at the time of filing this report, and some pupils were still trapped under the overturned truck.

The report also added that injured children were rushed to a nearby hospital, while the bodies of the deceased were taken home by their families for burial.

Truck-related accidents are increasing on many roads in Nigeria, often resulting in deaths and injuries.
Some stakeholders have blamed the recurrence on the poor training of the drivers of these trucks, while others have blamed it on the poor regulation by the government.

Lack of good roads, water, medical centres have been the lots of the residents of the part of the state who have been crying of neglect by the state government for the past years.
Metrobusinessnews.com (MBN) reports that most the local government headquarters are without infrastructure, despite the bogus allocations from the Federation Account as well as derivation as a member of the oil producing states.

This is even as the Usman Ododo administration started paying the old minimum wage in full to the disgruntled civil servants since the inceptionof bis administration, against the different percentages by the immediate past Yahaya Bello administration.

With the proposed building of airport by the state government, analysts say the government may not be thinking of implementing the new minimum wage, unless, possibly, when electioneering campaign begins in the next two years.
