The move comes after months of mounting concern over Nigeria’s diplomatic representation, following the two-year vacancy created by the recall of all ambassadors from foreign postings.

According to Arise News, President Bola Tinubu has ordered a “final cleanup” of the list of ambassadorial nominees, signalling that the long-awaited announcement is imminent.

The statement also added that Tinubu has ordered the security agencies to commence vetting of the nominees immediately.

Arise TV stated that the President can make the announcement as early as next week.
The renewed urgency to fill these critical diplomatic vacancies follows heightened tensions between Abuja and Washington, amid threats by U.S. President Donald Trump over alleged killings of Christians in Nigeria.

Observers have described the absence of Nigerian ambassadors for nearly two years as a major diplomatic weakness.

Some stakeholders have urged swift action, stressing that the appointment of new envoys is vital to bolster Nigeria’s foreign policy stance, defend national interests, and prevent external interference in the country’s internal affairs.

If the list is eventually announced, it is expected to reaffirm President Tinubu’s administration’s commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s foreign service and closing existing diplomatic gaps as the nation navigates increasingly complex international challenges.

Watch the announcement below:

President Tinubu will announce new ambassadors, and this may be as early as next week, as security services have been directed to conclude vetting immediately.
