Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, has donated ₦50 million to the Super Falcons, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to promoting sports development and empowering women through football.
This marks the second time in four months that the governor has rewarded the women’s team.
In June, he donated ₦20 million to the Falcons after their 2–0 victory over Cameroon’s Lionesses in a friendly match at the same venue, while the visiting team received ₦10 million.
Specifically, the governor made the donation while hosting the Nigerian women’s national team at the Governor’s Office, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, ahead of their second-leg 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) qualifier against Benin Republic’s Amazons.
In a post shared on his verified Facebook page on Tuesday, Governor Abiodun described the gesture as a show of appreciation for the team’s inspiring performances and a motivation for greater achievements.
“We were delighted to receive the Super Falcons of Nigeria in our office at Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, ahead of their second-leg WAFCON 2026 qualifier,” the governor said. “In recognition of their inspiring performances and to further motivate them for the task ahead, we announced a support package of ₦50 million to the team.”
Abiodun noted that the team’s return to the MKO Abiola International Stadium in Abeokuta signals Ogun State’s growing role in national sports development.
“Their return to the MKO Abiola International Stadium is a validation that we are doing something right in Ogun State,” he said. “Beyond hosting matches, we are transforming the stadium into a world-class sports hub—with a five-star hotel, cinema, shopping complex, and other facilities that will make Abeokuta a true sports and tourism destination.”
He commended the Falcons for their record 10th WAFCON title in Morocco, describing them as role models for discipline, teamwork, and excellence.
“What they represent goes far beyond football—they embody leadership, teamwork, and discipline,” he said. “Through their example, millions of young women are learning that excellence knows no gender and that with hard work and unity, they too can break barriers.”

The governor also pledged continued support for the team, noting that their success will inspire future generations of athletes and leaders.
“On behalf of the government and the good people of Ogun State, we assured the Super Falcons of our unwavering support,” he added. “Through their success, they will continue to inspire the next generation of leaders, athletes, and achievers.”
Meanwhile, the Super Falcons will face the Benin Republic in the return leg of their WAFCON qualifier at the MKO Abiola Stadium in Abeokuta. The team leads 2–0 from the first leg in Cotonou, with goals from Chinwendu Ihezuo and Esther Okoronkwo.
Head coach Justin Madugu said the team remains focused on securing qualification despite the first-leg advantage.
“We expect a tough match from the Beninoise, but we’re ready to give a strong performance to secure qualification for the 2026 WAFCON and continue our push toward the 2027 World Cup in Brazil,” he said.
