According to report from ESPN, Nigeria’s 2-1 victory over Lesotho may have revived their hopes of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, but the result came with moments of tension. Head coach Eric Chelle was calm yet firm in his post match comments, addressing both the goalkeeping error by Stanley Nwabali and Victor Osimhen’s visible frustration toward the team’s defensive lapses.
The Super Eagles started brightly, with Troost Ekong (from the penalty spot) and Akor Adams on finding the net to put Nigeria in control. However, a late mix up between Nwabali and his defenders allowed Lesotho to pull one back, creating unnecessary pressure in the closing minutes. Cameras captured Osimhen visibly agitated, gesturing toward the backline and voicing his disappointment as Nigeria struggled to close out the match.

Speaking to reporters afterward, Coach Chelle avoided publicly criticising his players but admitted that concentration must improve if the Super Eagles are to secure qualification. “At this level, small mistakes can change everything. We have to stay calm, learn, and be more focused in key moments,” he said.
Chelle defended Nwabali, noting that the goalkeeper has been consistent for Nigeria and deserves support rather than blame. “Nwabali has saved us many times. Everyone can make mistakes; what matters is how we respond,” the coach added.
When asked about Osimhen’s reaction, Chelle explained that such emotion is part of leadership. “Victor always wants to win. He’s passionate, and that’s what drives him. The important thing is that the team stays united,” he stated.
The victory keeps Nigeria’s qualification hopes alive, but Chelle’s message was clear the Super Eagles must show greater discipline and composure in upcoming fixtures if they are to secure their spot at the 2026 World Cup.
