Abuja, Kogi, Two Other States To Experience Darkness As AEDC Workers Threaten Shutdown Of Electricity Supply

Nigerians have again been thrown into darkness following the collapse of the national electricity grid.

A tweet via the official handle of Nigeria’s national grid confirmed that the grid collapsed at about 2:09 pm on Wednesday.

“The major grid setback has occurred and the restoration is to commence,” the handler wrote.

Also, Adakole Elijah, Jos DisCo’s Head of Corporate Communications confirmed the development and said normal power supply would be restored as soon as the grid supply is restored back to normalcy.

“The current outage being experienced within our franchise States is a result of loss of power supply from the national grid.

“The loss of power supply from the national grid occurred this afternoon at about 1333 hours of today, Wednesday, 11th December 2024, hence the loss of power supply on all our feeders.

“We hope to restore normal power supply to our esteemed customers as soon as the grid supply is restored back to normalcy,” Dr Elijah disclosed in a notice to Jos Disco customers

Since January 2024 till date, the grid has collapsed 11 times.

Within one week in October, the grid collapsed three times with its attendant blackouts, sparking reactions from Nigerians.

This comes amid reports that the country faces an imminent electricity blackout as the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) has directed gas producers to halt supply of gas to indebted generation companies (GenCos).

In an X (formerly Twitter) post on the official account of Nigeria’s national grid on Wednesday, it was revealed that NMDPRA’s directive to halt gas supply to GenCos is due to the over N2 trillion debts that the Federal Government and some GenCos owe gas producers in Nigeria.

The tweet pointed out that NMDPRA stated that the substantial debts owed to producers had hindered their ability to sustain operations.

“An electricity blackout is imminent following the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority’s directive to gas producers to cease supplying gas to indebted generation companies (GenCos).

“NMDPRA stated that the substantial debts owed to producers had hindered their ability to sustain operations. It called on gas off-takers, particularly power generation companies, to ensure timely payment for the gas supplied.

“The federal government and some GenCos currently owe over N2 trillion in legacy debts to gas producers in Nigeria,” the post read.
