Former US president Jimmy Carter and his wife, Rosalynn Carter, are entering their “final chapter” together at their home in Plains, Georgia, according to the couple’s grandson.
In an interview with People magazine, Josh Carter revealed that it is evident that his grandparents are nearing the end of their lives.

Jimmy Carter, who is 98 years old, entered hospice care in February with the desire to spend his remaining time at home surrounded by family.
Meanwhile, in May, the Carter family shared the news that Rosalynn Carter, aged 96, has been diagnosed with dementia.

Describing his grandparents as the “entertainers,” Josh Carter acknowledged that the roles have reversed, and now the family has taken on the responsibility of entertaining them.
Despite his age, Jimmy Carter is still fully himself, although tired.

According to Josh, he continues to feel the love that surrounds him. Rosalynn, on the other hand, still recognizes her family for the most part and is capable of forming new memories.

The Carters have been married for 77 years, tying the knot in 1946.

Jimmy Carter served in the US Navy before becoming the Democratic governor of Georgia in 1971. His presidential victory in the 1976 bicentennial election secured his place as the 39th president of the United States, defeating Republican Gerald Ford.

Throughout his term, Rosalynn Carter, known as the “Steel Magnolia,” played a significant role as a powerful and influential first lady, often influencing her husband’s decision-making.

Josh Carter reflected on his grandfather’s feelings towards his wife’s struggle with dementia, expressing that it must be challenging for him.
However, he also highlighted the incredible bond the couple shares, having experienced everything together.
With awe, he shared that they continue to hold hands, emphasizing the beauty of their enduring love.

Jimmy Carter holds the record for being the longest-lived president in history. Since leaving office, he has dedicated his time to diplomatic missions and philanthropy.
In 2002, he was honored with the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts in seeking peaceful resolutions to conflicts, advancing democracy and human rights, and promoting social and economic development.

Regarding their future, Josh Carter revealed that it is likely his grandfather will pass away before his grandmother.
As Jimmy Carter is in hospice care while Rosalynn is not, the situation can be seen as a matter of simple mathematics.

In March, President Joe Biden announced that Jimmy Carter had asked him to deliver his eulogy when the time comes.
