In accordance with Section 86 of the 1999 constitution, the Senate has written to President Bola Tinubu requesting that he quickly appoint an Auditor General for the Federation (AuGF). This Day reports that the upper house argued that the federation’s lack of an auditor-general for about ten months had exposed the administration to possible mismanagement, transparency issues, and accountability issues. His information was made public in a statement that was signed by Senate Committee on Public Account Chairman Senator Aliyu Wadada. The legislature noted that the office of the auditor general for the federation had gone 10 months without a substantive auditor-general, despite the fact that it was Nigeria’s top auditing body. The communique reads in part: ”The absence of a substantive AuGF will affect strict adherence to accounting standards, and the annual reports of the auditor-general on the accounts of the Federation of Nigeria Agencies and Ministries, Agencies, Departments (MDAs) cannot be efficiently transmitted. Senate demands appointment of auditor general from President Tinubu.” ALSO READ:Nigerian Senate Rejects Tinubu’s Request To Invade Niger Republic Over Coup Wadada added that the lack of checks and balances, which were a crucial component of the committee of the national assembly for public account, has been caused by the auditor-general’s absence. The Senate then said that, for the sake of the nation, President Tinubu must pay attention to its recommendations. It further stated that the government’s attempts to combat corruption and promote accountability and transparency in government will be hampered by the auditor general’s absence.
