Lecturers at the Lagos State University (LASU) on Monday resumed work following the suspension of the over three-month-old strike embarked upon by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that ASUU had on Thursday Feb. 7 suspended the indefinite strike it embarked upon since Nov. 4, 2018 to press home some demands.

The demands of the union included a shortfall in salaries of some Federal Universities’ workers and lecturers, unpaid Earned Academic Allowances and the revitalisation of projects that were part of the 2009 agreement among others.

Dr Tony Dansu, Secretary, ASUU-LASU Chapter, told NAN in Lagos that the decision to comply with the resumption was upheld at the chapter’s Congress earlier today.

“Following the congress, the university lecturers have been directed to resume their duties 100 percent because during the strike, only one aspect of their key duty which is teaching was suspended.

“Our key duty is research, teaching and community service and the strike only affected the academic activities,” he said.

Dansu said the lecturers now await the decision of the university Senate on the review of the academic calendar.

He said that the participation of some lecturers in the upcoming general elections would not affect their productivity at work since the election would be at weekends.

“The participation of any lecturer in the election is a personal commitment and ASUU will not take responsible for any positive or negative outcome of it.

“Since engagement for the elections begins from Thursday and ends on Sunday, the participating lecturers are expected to resume work on Monday,” he said.

NAN reports that a meeting by the university Senate for the consideration of the revised 2017/2018 Academic calendar is ongoing.

Meanwhile, Prof. Olanrewaju Fagbohun, Vice-Chancellor of the university had in a statement welcomed students of the institution back from the ASUU nationwide strike that paralysed academic activities in most public universities in Nigeria.

Fagbohun said that academic activities for the ongoing session in the university had resumed with immediate effect, as the semester and session had been overstretched.
