NNPCMusa Shuaibu, NNPC Managing Director, Medical Services Ltd, has assured that the company would continue to host the Rosebowl Golf Tournament in order to maintain its bonding with its host communities.

Shuaibu, who represented Maikanti Baru, the NNPC Group Managing Director at the tournament, said on Tuesday in Port Harcourt that this was imperative in view of golf’s importance to human life.

“The game has immense advantages, in the maintenance of good health, enhancement of social interactions and even political efforts.

“Also, the oxygen content on the golf course remains the best, compared to the environment you have in some games.

“Moreover, there is no age limit in the game. As a footballer, at 40 and at 50 you are out of it. But there are people who are 90 and are still playing golf,’’ he told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

Also speaking to NAN, Abba Bukkar, the Managing Director of Port Harcourt Refining Company (PHRC), said he has been impressed by what he has seen of the sport through the tournament.

“I am not a golfer, but I will give the game a very serious consideration of becoming a player. It looks like a very interesting game,’’ he said.

Ahmadu Zambuk, the NNPC Golf Coordinator in the Southern Zone, told NAN that the Rosebowl Golf Tournament was part of the company’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR).

“PHRC has been hosting it since its inception in the 70s and it is a forum where both the NNPC staff and retirees all over the federation and friends from different clubs come together and fraternise,’’ he said.

Edith Johnson, Chairperson of the tournament’s Organising/Planning Committee, said the golfing sport could be “exerting but steady’’.

“You appear to be walking on your shoulders, waist and feet. But clearly, for our age, I think it is very effective.’’

NAN reports that Ikechukwu Allagoa and Diana Okeh respectively emerged the gross winners in the men and women categories of the tournament’s 2018 edition held on Saturday and Sunday.

Godfrey Omonohio and I.O. Obialor were the gross winners of the NNPC men and women categories respectively, while A.P. Diete-Spiff won the best nett in the veterans (70+) category.

In the NNPC Retirees men’s category, Kuna Ikiba won the best nett.

F.A. Abbiyesuku and Eunice Ogan won the best nett in the NNPC Super Vet men and women categories respectively.

The best nett winners in the guest men and ladies categories were Dave Eguare and Christy Kaase respectively.

Omie Abbey and Rosemary Briggs won in the senior men and ladies categories respectively.

Subsidiary prizes were awarded to Ikechukwu Allagoa for clinching the Longest Drive Men’s award and Christy Kaase the Longest Drive Women’s award.

Adonye Peterside won the Nearest to the Pin Men’s award, while Pat Ozoemena won the Nearest to the Pin Ladies’ award.
