The world’s largest professional food trade exhibition, SIAL Paris 2026, will hold from October 17 to 21 at Paris Nord Villepinte, France, bringing together global food industry stakeholders to explore emerging innovations, strengthen commercial partnerships and examine opportunities in the evolving international food market.
The exhibition is expected to attract 8,000 exhibitors and showcase 400,000 products, providing a platform for manufacturers, retailers, distributors, food-service o11perators and logistics providers to assess developments across the food value chain.
According to Akin Akinbola, representative of Promosalons Nigeria, Cameroon and Gabon, Promosalons will organise a business delegation comprising members of the National Association of Supermarket Operators of Nigeria, the Association of Professional Food Service Providers of Nigeria and the National Association of Nigerian Traders.
The delegation’s participation comes amid growing pressure on Nigeria’s food and retail industries to improve supply chains, strengthen local processing, reduce post-harvest losses and respond to changing consumer preferences.
A report accompanying the exhibition highlights how urbanisation and population growth are reshaping global food demand. As cities expand, consumers increasingly seek convenient products, ready-to-eat meals, modern retail outlets, food delivery services and more reliable distribution systems.
According to the report, the United Nations estimates that 68 percent of the world’s population will live in urban areas by 2050, compared with 55 percent in 2018. This demographic shift is expected to influence food production, processing, packaging, storage and distribution.

Nigeria is particularly relevant to this transition. The report, citing Market Research Store, estimates that the country’s food and drink market was worth approximately $53.87 billion in 2024 and could reach $84.83 billion by 2032.
However, capturing this potential will require more than increasing production. Nigeria must also improve its capacity to process, preserve and distribute food efficiently, particularly as urban consumers demand greater convenience, consistent quality and affordable products.
A major highlight of SIAL Paris 2026 will be the 30th anniversary of SIAL Innovation, a competition organised in partnership with ProtéinesXTC to recognise products and concepts influencing the future of food. According to the exhibition’s September press release, more than 2,750 products were submitted, of which 775 were selected, representing a record for the anniversary edition.
The innovations reflect growing interest in functional foods, plant-based alternatives, fermented products, convenient formats and more sustainable production methods. Examples include plant-based steak, protein-rich surimi noodles, fermented fruit drinks, water-fried potato chips and packaging designed to reduce refrigeration requirements. Other developments demonstrate how food-processing by-products can be converted into higher-value ingredients.
For Nigerian businesses, these innovations could provide ideas for diversifying supermarket shelves, improving catering operations and developing locally adapted products. Nevertheless, adoption will depend on affordability, consumer acceptance, regulatory compliance and suitable storage and distribution infrastructure.
The exhibition will also offer opportunities to sample more than 100 selected products through SIAL Taste, while SIAL Live will host presentations and discussions on food innovation. The Public Choice and Top 3 Countries awards are scheduled for October 20.
Organised by Comexposium, SIAL Paris is part of the international SIAL Network, which connects food and beverage trade events across several markets.
For Nigeria, the event offers an opportunity to connect local operators with international suppliers and learn from markets where modern retail, food-service delivery and processing are expanding. Such engagement could help businesses identify improved sourcing practices, packaging technologies and distribution models.
Ultimately, the value of the Nigerian delegation’s participation will depend on how effectively its members translate the knowledge and commercial relationships gained in Paris into practical improvements at home. Stronger local processing, better preservation systems, efficient logistics and affordable innovation will be essential if Nigeria is to turn its expanding food market into a source of industrial growth, investment and employment.
