A heavy downpour accompanied by strong winds recently caused significant damage to several houses in Isua Akoko, the headquarters of Akoko South-East Local Government Area of Ondo State.
The persistent downpour and rainstorm submerged residential areas, ripped off roofs, homes, and damaged public infrastructure.
It was gathered that the heavy rainfall accompanied by the storm started on Monday night,7th September, 2026. Ecological factor also contributed to the high flooding experienced during and after the rain. Some street lights, solar panels/poles, electrical installations were affected.
Natives and residents of the aggrarian community have expressed shock over the havoc wreaked on the community following the devastating rain storm that blew off the roofs of several residential buildings, a primary school and pulled down solar and electricity poles. The heavy rainfall triggered widespread flash flooding and severe damage.
Witnesses said the rain, which lasted several hours, led to the destruction of residential buildings, fences and other structures in the town. Some residents were forced to vacate their homes after the storm damaged parts of their buildings, rendering them unsafe for habitation.
A resident, who pleaded anonymity, said no fewer than 20 houses were severely affected by the storm, while several other structures sustained varying degrees of damage.
According to him, the incident displaced some families who have been forced to seek temporary shelter with neighbours and relatives.

Speaking on the disaster, the Public Relations Officer of the Association of Isua Advisory Council, Ajoke Alecs Banana, said the destruction was extensive, although no life was lost and no injury was recorded.
Banana said the affected residents were facing serious difficulties following the destruction of their properties and displacement from their homes.
“Fortunately, there was no casualty and no injury, but some families were displaced as a result of the disaster,” he said.
He, however, noted that the damage was not caused by the heavy rainfall and storm alone, explaining that ecological factors also contributed significantly to the extent of the destruction.
According to him, the situation had created an urgent need for intervention to cushion the effects of the disaster on the affected residents.
Also speaking, the Secretary of the Association of Isua Advisory Council, Mr Raymond Adeyemi, said the association was already making efforts to bring succour to the victims.
Adeyemi said the association was concerned about the plight of the affected residents and would continue to support them while seeking assistance from relevant authorities and stakeholders.
The community appealed to the Ondo State Government, Akoko South-East Local Government, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Ondo State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) and other relevant bodies to urgently intervene and assist the victims.
Residents also called for measures to address the ecological factors identified as contributing to the destruction and to prevent a recurrence of such disaster in the community.
