Former Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola has accepted the position of Interim National Secretary of the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

The appointment comes as part of the National Opposition Coalition Group’s strategy to unite various parties against the ruling government.

Aregbesola’s ADC has been chosen as the platform for this coalition effort.

In his acceptance speech delivered on Tuesday, 1st July 2025, Aregbesola outlined what he described as his vision for transforming the party. The former governor said opposition parties needed to move beyond mere criticism to offering concrete solutions.

“We must be the party that talks about public education and actually builds schools. That speaks of security and supports real policies to keep our communities safe. That believes in jobs and works to create them. That stands for Nigeria, not just during elections, but in everyday governance,” Aregbesola stated.

Aregbesola acknowledged the difficulties facing the opposition movement, stating that rebuilding trust with Nigerian voters would require significant effort. “This is not an easy task. It will take time. It will demand sacrifice. But it can be done,” he said during his address.

He also called on supporters to hold him personally accountable for his actions in office. “I ask for your support not just in words, but in action. Hold me accountable. Challenge me when I stray. And stand with me as we begin this journey to rebuild our party, restore its soul, and return politics to its rightful place—as a service to the people,” the former governor declared.

Aregbesola previously served as Governor of Osun State and has been a prominent figure in Nigerian politics for over two decades. The National Opposition Coalition Group’s decision to adopt the ADC as its primary platform suggests a strategic move to present a united front against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

The former governor then concluded his speech with a rallying cry for democratic renewal: “Thank you, and may our work ahead be worthy of the hopes our people place in us. Long live our party. Long live our democracy. Long live the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”
