Labour Suspends Nationwide Strike

The Joint National Executive Council (NEC) meeting of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) has suspended the ongoing strike over the battering of the NLC President, Joe Ajaero, among other pending issues.

The strike was suspended following the intervention of the Federal Government through the Office of the National Security Adviser (NSA)

The leaders of the unions made the decision on Wednesday night, after an extraordinary meeting that commenced at about 7 pm.

The meeting was sequel to an earlier engagement with that of National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu where the NSA informed the protesting labour leaders of the arrest for the perpetrators of violence against the NLC president, Joe Ajaero, in Imo State.

It was gathered that the meeting which lasted for close to one hour during which various affiliates and state chapters reviewed the outcome of the meeting held between the leaders of the organised labour and Ribadu.

Speaking after the meeting, the National Deputy Vice-President of the TUC, Tommy Etim, confirmed that the strike had been suspended.

“The NEC of the NLC and the TUC have suspended the strike. We did this based on our trust for the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, who gave us his words,” Etim said on Wednesday night.

The labour unions are protesting the brutalisation of its National President, Joe Ajaero, and the failure of the government to implement some of the agreements reached on October 2, 2023 effectively.
