President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has held a meeting with the governors of States that share boundaries with the Niger Republic.

The meeting held at the State House, Abuja, on Sunday, August 6, 2023, was part of consultations by President Tinubu on the situation of things in the neighbouring country.

The governors that attended the meeting were Ahmed Aliyu (Sokoto), Umar Namadi (Jigawa), Mai Malam Buni (Yobe), Idris Nasir (Kebbi) and Dr Dikko Radda (Katsina).

President Tinubu, in his capacity as Chairman of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), had given a seven-day ultimatum to the military junta in the Niger Republic to return power back to the ousted President, Mohammed Bazoum.

Beyond the ultimatum, President Tinubu, in a meeting held in Abuja last weekend, also announced a number of sanctions which have seen borders linking Niger blocked.

At the same time, power and flight activities have been suspended indefinitely. Similarly, Northern Elites have also kicked against the planned onslaught against the military junta in Niger, while citing the likely consequence of such action on Nigeria.
