The Committee set up by the Speaker, House of Representatives Yakubu Dogara to review some of the nation’s laws, has reviewed over 300 laws and drafted about 182 bills.
Director General, National Institute for Legislative Studies (NILS) Ladi Hamalai, stated this in Abuja while declaring open a workshop on review of federal universities laws in Nigeria.
She listed some of the laws already recommended for amendment to include Companies and Allied Matters Act (CAMA), Electoral Act, Legal Education Consolidated Act, Administration of Criminal Justice Act among others.
According to her, the round-table will afford stakeholders the opportunity to contribute to the development of the laws of federal universities as well assist in harmonising the federal universities laws in order to develop a sustainable legal framework for the development of the nation’s educational system.
Hamalai urged the Committee to come up with relevant recommendations for updating the nation’s universities laws to international best practices while at the same time reflecting the dynamism, growth and current challenges facing the country.
“This gathering will also give us an opportunity to amend the laws and remove all obsolete provisions in university laws.
“It would also afford us the opportunity to create the legal framework for universities to take the benefits of the growth and development of information technology education,” she said.
On his part, a university Don, Professor  Cyril Okonkwo said the purpose of the workshop is to give stakeholders an opportunity to make input into reforms of universities laws.
Vice chancellors of federal universities across the country, researchers as well as representatives from the National Universities Commission (NUC) attended the event.
