President Muhammadu Buhari plans to take 10 days of medical leave from Monday, he said in a letter read out in the upper house of parliament on Thursday.
“I will be away on a short medical vacation from Monday January 23 to February 6th, 2017,” the 74-year-old former military ruler said in the letter, which was read out by the Senate president. “While I am away, the vice president will perform the functions of my office.”
The medical leave was confirmed by the president’s spokesman, Femi Adesina. No details were given on the medical issue that led the president to take leave.
Buhari flew to London for a 10-day holiday in June 2016, during which received treatment for a persistent ear infection, officials said.
