Newcastle United arrived at Elland Road with plenty of reasons for optimism. Five points from their opening three Premier League games had given the Magpies a solid start under new manager Matthias Jaissle, and there was growing belief that this could be the beginning of something special.
But football can be brutally unforgiving.
On Monday night, Leeds United reminded Newcastle just how quickly expectations can change, producing a stunning 4-1 victory that left the visitors searching for answers and sent the home supporters into celebration.
Both sides had entered the match unbeaten in the league, but it was Leeds who looked like the team with something to prove.
Leeds Turn Up the Heat
The game was competitive in the opening stages, but once Leeds found their rhythm, Newcastle struggled to cope with the intensity.
The breakthrough arrived in the 32nd minute when Ao Tanaka’s effort took a couple of deflections before Newcastle’s Lewis Miley was credited with an own goal.
Just two minutes later, Leeds doubled their advantage.
Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s powerful header eventually found its way onto Jayden Bogle, who was credited with the goal. For Calvert-Lewin, it was frustratingly not his goal, but his influence on the game was becoming impossible to ignore.
And before Newcastle could recover, Calvert-Lewin got his moment.
The Leeds striker powered into the box and calmly finished to make it 3-0 just before half-time.
Three goals in a matter of minutes had completely changed the mood inside Elland Road.
For a Newcastle side that had shown plenty of promise during the opening weeks of the season, the collapse was unexpected.
The Magpies had previously drawn with Liverpool and Bournemouth and beaten Tottenham, building confidence around Jaissle’s new project. But against Leeds, they struggled to match the home side’s physicality, pressing and intensity.
Jaissle would later admit that Newcastle failed to match Leeds physically in the first half.
That was perhaps the biggest story of the night.

Leeds simply looked hungrier.
Okafor Adds the Fourth
If Newcastle had hoped for a way back into the match after the break, Noah Okafor quickly ended those hopes.
The Leeds forward produced an excellent volley in the 59th minute to make it 4-0 and turn an impressive victory into a statement win.
Newcastle eventually found a consolation goal through substitute Bazoumana Touré late in the match, but it was little more than a footnote on a night dominated by Leeds.
The final whistle confirmed what the 90 minutes had already made clear: Leeds had been the better team.
For Newcastle, this defeat should not erase the positives from their opening weeks. Every new manager and squad needs time, and Jaissle’s project is still developing.
But the result is also a warning.
Good starts create expectations, and expectations bring pressure.
Newcastle had given their supporters reason to believe that this season could be different. Now, after a 4-1 defeat, the challenge is to show that one bad night does not define the season.
For Leeds, however, this was much more than three points.
Daniel Farke’s side climbed to third in the Premier League, maintaining their unbeaten league start and producing one of their biggest statements of the young season.
Elland Road had been waiting for a night like this.
And Leeds delivered.
