Excitement As WAEC Uncovers Errors In 2025 SSCE Results, Orders Fresh Check

Hope of some schools and particularly, candidates who felt shortchanged in some  subjects in the just released 2025 SSCE results is being rekindled as the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) says it has discovered errors in the 2025 Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) results.

The council gave this notice on Thursday in a statement issued and made available by its spokesperson, Mrs. Moyosola Adesina.

WAEC Nigeria, on Monday, announced the release of the results with only 38.32 per cent of the total 1,969,313 candidates, who sat the examination, obtained credits and above in at least five mandatory subjects, including English Language and Mathematics – a sharp decline of 33.8% from the last year performance in the same exam which was 72.12%.

This outcome has been generating controversy across the country, with many blaming several factors, including systemic failure by WAEC, for the poor performance.

Some of the students in some schools in Lagos and Ogun states told metrobusinessnews.com (MBN) that, though their results were okay, considering the general dismal performance, they however felt shortchanged as the grades in some subjects fell short of their expectations.

“I thank God for everything considering the number of As and Bs, I obtained in my results, but I expected A’s in Mathematics,  English and Biology. With this announcement by WAEC, Iam highly encouraged with my hope alive for realisation of my dream.,” says a candidate.

According to Lagos based analyst, the development goes a long way to “instil confidence in WAEC, despite the rising decadence and erosion of values even in public service and institutions. I think WAEC leadership should be commended for exemplary conduct,”.

However, WAEC in its fresh release also asked candidates who might have checked their results before now to re-check the same on the portal for the authenticity of their results, citing technical clichés detected during internal review of the released results for this reason.

“The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) sincerely regrets to inform the general public of technical issues discovered during the internal review of the recently released results of the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for School Candidates (SC) 2025,” the statement reads.

“As part of our efforts to curb examination malpractice, the Council embarked on an innovation (paper serialization) already deployed by a national examination body. It is also worth noting that this is in line with best practices in assessment.

“The paper serialization was carried out in Mathematics, English Language, Biology and Economics. However, an internal post result release procedure revealed some technical bugs in the results.”

Adesina said the council is taking urgent steps to rectify the glitches to ensure fairness and credibility.

“As a result, access to the WASSCE (SC) 2025 results has been temporarily denied on the result checker portal,” she said.

“We extend our deep and sincere apologies to all affected candidates and the general public. We appreciate their patience and understanding as we work diligently to resolve this matter with transparency and urgency within the next twenty-four (24) hours.

“On this note, candidates who have previously checked their results are advised to re-check after 24 hours from now.”
