The National Automotive Design and Development Council,(NADDC) has commenced moves towards enviromental safety of emisions.
Consequently, the council thirsday , through a directive on safety of environmental emissions urged Nigerians to follow the directive to healthier safety of the environment.
Aminu Jalal,director General of NADDC said the new development was consequent upon the meeting with the standards Organisation of Nigeria,(SON)and after due consultations with relevant stakeholders.
This according to Jalal has led to the reduction of the maximum allowed levels of Sulphur in Petroluem fuels in the country.
Therefore, he said that from July 1, 2017, diesel fuel (AGO) should have maximum Sulphur levels of 50 parts per million (ppm)(Reference NIS 948:2017)”.
Also, starting from the samer peeriod, Petroleum motor spirit (Petrol) should have maximum Sulphur levels of 150 ppm (Reference NIS 116:2017).
This is in addition to Household Kerosine (HHK) which should have maximum Sulphur levels of 150 ppm (Reference NIS 949:2017), within the same period.
The statement further explained that Sulphur in petroleum fuels results in vehicle exhaust emissions that have negative health and environmental impact, stressing that harmful emission reducing technologies in vehicles also require low Sulphur fuels to be effective.
